About Kate Ferguson. 

Kate Ferguson is a professionally trained journalist, video producer, photographer and RePL qualified drone pilot, based in Perth, Western Australia. 

With twenty years experience working in commercial media, Kate spent her formative years as a one person television bureau, producing video stories from idea to broadcast on a daily basis for the nightly news in both Western Australia and Queensland.

Her work has been recognised at local and international awards, including best online video content at the Asian Digital Media awards, finalist in the Interpretation category twice at the West Australian Heritage Awards, finalist in the Fremantle International Portrait Prize and finalist in the multimedia, arts and sport categories at the West Australian Media Awards.  More information can be found here:  http://www.linkedin.com/in/katefergusonmedia

In 2010, Kate discovered her love of photography while working for The West Australian newspaper and these days, she works as a one person multimedia operator - writing both long and short-form stories for print and online, shooting the accompanying pictures and producing video features from idea to broadcast.

Since 2015, Kate has been running her own freelance business as a journalist, video producer, photographer, writer, VoiceOver artist, social media consultant and RePL qualified drone pilot. Her work has been published on a wide array of media platforms including the ABC, The West Australian, Australian Financial Review, Scoop Magazine, Broadsheet, Hoyts Cinemas, Luna Cinemas, Channel Seven, Channel Nine, Network Ten and GWN News.

During that time, Kate also worked as a sessional course designer, lecturer and tutor in journalism and media production, including over three years as the WA Representative for the Google News Initiative. Kate also has experience as a Lecturer and Tutor at the University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University and University of Notre Dame.

Kate has an adventurous spirit and specialises in outback and regional storytelling. Some of her projects include producing a documentary and audio content for the PowerUp Museum which was nominated for a MAGNA Award, curating the The Gwalia's Gold exhibition which was a finalist in the 2017 and 2019 WA Heritage Awards and collating interviews and photographs for the State Timber Museum which won a MAGNA Award and producing the seven-part video Outback Gin Series,

In 2022, Kate was commissioned by the ABC to set up a new news bureau in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, covering from Exmouth to Shark Bay, as part of the “Oasis” project. During this time, Kate’s stories received national news coverage in digital, television and radio platforms.

For almost eight years, Kate was involved with the MEAA (Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance), where she was the first female to be elected as WA President of the Media section and also worked in the roles of National Vice President of the Media section, Board member at MEAA and a Non-Executive Director at The Walkley Foundation for Journalism. She also designed the new Innovation Award for the 2025 Walkley Mid Year Prizes, with Margie Smithurst.

For almost six years, Kate has been involved with Women in Media and is currently the Co-Convenor for Western Australia.

Kate is also a proud member of the The Copyright Agency.
